LAHORE: Former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf rejected claims that he ordered the assassination of late Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto.
Speaking to BBC, the former president, while referring to the report
s of him threatening her on the phone, rejected the claim that he ordered her assassination.
“Honestly, I laugh at it,” he said, “Why would I kill her?”
Musharraf also said that some rogue e
lements of the establishment could have been involved in her murder.
He added that rogue e
lements could have been in touch with the Taliban as well because the Pakistan
i society is polarised on religious lines.
He expla
ined that any woman who is incl
ined towards the west is seen with suspicion by such rogue e
lements.
“I don’t have any facts available. But my assessment is very accurate I think… A lady who is in known to be incl
ined towards the West is seen suspiciously by those e
lements,” he said.
